The Role of Professional Development of School Librarians in Keeping up with the Digital Age

Abstract

This study focuses on the professional development of school librarians in Qena Governorate and its role in keeping pace with the contemporary digital transformation. The descriptive-analytical methodology was employed, and data were collected from 500 school librarians. The study revealed the sample distribution by gender, with 266 males representing (53.2%) and 234 females representing (46.8%).
The findings of the study indicated and revealed a keen interest in professional development, where 438 individuals representing (87.6%) indicated that professional development is very important, while 53 individuals representing only (10.6%) regarded it somewhat important, according to the response percentages.
Regarding the entities providing training courses, the findings indicated that 400 individuals representing (80%) benefited from the administrative body affiliated with the library, compared to 70 individuals representing only (14%) receiving training from the Department of Libraries and Information Technology at South Valley University.
On the other hand, the findings illuminated that the preferred topics for future training program emphasis are: recent developments in library science at (44.8%), followed by library services at (10%), and school library standards and regulations at (10%).
Based on these findings, it is recommended to enhance the quality of training content and to improve the efficiency of trainers in response to the challenges posed by digital transformation. This study contributes as a detailed understanding of the challenges and needs of school librarians in Qena Governorate amidst the ongoing digital transformation.
