Aits are the most inconstant geomorphological phenomena in the Nile waterway between Al-Fashn and Beni Suef where they spatially changed during different times. An ait is usually formed in the middle of the Nile waterway, yet it soon budges to one side of the Nile where it fuses with one of the two banks forming a new ait. Eventually, the newly-formed ait shortly budges to one of the Nile banks to produce a third ait, and so on. What leads to the same end is the hydrological changes such as drainage volume, water levels, and water speed. Another reason is human interference like filling up of shallow areas and sub-canals, construction of dams, arches, and stone heads, and bank claddings which all have resulted in reducing the capacity of the river in the area under study. Moreover, increasing the deposition rates in the southern sector of the Nile leads to some geomorphological changes in the waterway. For example, some aits are fused with other aits, or with the floodplain, or new aits are shaped. Such geomorphological changes (known as migration of aits) have yielded numerous geomorphological phenomena, such as sub-canals, water extensions, abandoned canals, and river detours, which are all observed and investigated via geoinformatics techniques, especially remote sensing and geographic information systems.
