This study attempts to shed light on a rhetorical phenomenon, which gained attention and great interest of rhetoricians and linguists alike. The concerned phenomenon is linguistic syntactic deviation. This phenomenon which could help to ascertain the unique rhetoric of Arabic language as it supports a text with semantic textual uniqueness. This is because such a phenomenon surprises the receiver and causes his astonishment in addition to motivating one’s mind because of deviating from the expected norm. Moreover, reaching semantic interpretation and connotations of this syntactic transformation requires more linguistic investigation, more accuracy and more concentration. This research paper attempts to tackle and shed light on role of context in directing syntactic structures to reach the intended and denotative meanings. The researcher chose verses of “deceit” in the Holy Quran as the subject and topic of her research.
This research paper reached some findings, and the most significant of which are the following: this deviation and change in the syntactic structure causes the receiver/reader to pay attention and to interaction with the text. Context has the most important role in interpreting what deviates from the norm in syntactic traditions. Changing from implicitness to explicitness is the most prominent and recurrent types of syntactic deviation in verses of “deceit” in the Holy Quran. This was intentional for several purposes, the most important of which are: exaggeration in ruling, magnification, confirming generalization, intention of slandering. In addition, this study found out that the Quranic text, in some instances, changed and deviated from verbal syntactic structure to nominal synaptic structure for expressing failure and the deceiving people’s deceit. This is because nominalism is distinctive for being persistent, progressive and continuous. Finally, this deviation was suitable for the context of confirmation, assertion and Allah’s divine promise.
