Abstract

Onion is an important export economic food crop in the trade balance in general and in agriculture in particular which generates a rewarding income, raising producers' standard of living, satisfying consumers' needs, and using onion for human food, medical, therapeutic and industrial purposes. It is also a primary export crop in Arab markets in particular and the world's markets in general, due to its high quality, storage tolerance and early maturity. Thus, it is one of the cornerstones of Egypt's agricultural exports, which provides substantial foreign currency, is cultivated in old and new reclaimed land, and is produced in more than one single or loaded agricultural lump, making it a comparative and competitive advantage in its production and export in the study area.
Thus, the importance of studying onions as an economic agricultural crop of great importance in order to know the suitability of the study area for its cultivation, production and marketing, and the availability of geographical factors suitable for its cultivation and production in the study area, which became clear to be suitable, especially since Beni Suef Governorate occupies first place in terms of onion area. At the level of the governorates of Upper Egypt, Central Egypt, and North Upper Egypt, while it ranks third in terms of onion area nationwide in 2020 , this is evident from the increase in its area from 3.6 thousand acres in 1997  to18.1  thousand acres in 2022 , a rate of 404%, with a total production amounting to 233.8  thousand tons. The centers of Ahnasia and Samasta also account for the largest share of the onion area, at 65%, which also represents the onion region at the center level. The study also addressed the economics of onion production and marketing and its problems, based on the field study and the results of questionnaires.
