The theory of speech acts constituted the most important link in pragmatic studies; as this theory transferred the interest from the sentence to the event or achievement achieved by this linguistic act. This is because pragmatics is interested in looking at language through the usage situation, and speech acts are a basic component of its components through which it proceeds to analysis; to stand on the semantic purposes and the goal of the speech and communication process. This is also aimed to know the relationship between the speaker and the addressee. Moreover, expressive speech acts are one of the most important types of speech acts according to Searle's classification; because they are expressive acts through which the speaker's feelings are expressed and their basic purpose is to vent; and then influence the recipient, and direct or guide him to do or leave something.
This study aims to track expressive speech acts in Naguib Mahfouz's novel "Al-Lis Wa Al-Kilab", or in English "The Thief and the Dogs and in Persian: "Dzd Ws-s-gha", and to know what these expressive acts expressed and the achievement purpose of them. This research relied on the method of pragmatic analysis in monitoring and analyzing expressive acts in the Persian translation of this novel.
The research includes an introduction that addressed the significance of the research and the purpose of its study, the research plan and previous studies. Then, the study reviews the definition of the speech act and the foundations of its classification and types according to Searle from a linguistic perspective. Then, the researcher discusses expressive speech acts of different types in the novel and the subject of the study. The research reached a number of findings that were mentioned in the conclusion of the research. Finally, the study ends with a list of sources and references that the study relied on.
