The study aimed to reveal the social cost of consanguineous marriage, as one of its children was afflicted with thalassemia.
In the study, the researcher relied on the following methodological procedures: Social survey approach: A questionnaire form was used to collect data, which was applied to a number of (140) mothers of children with thalassemia. The number of people with thalassemia in the Red Crescent Hospital in Qena Governorate at the time of applying the research was about (280) affected children. The researcher applied the questionnaire. The case study approach was also used on 50% of their mothers: the in-depth interview tool was used with a number of (10) children with thalassemia, aged between (7-14 years), as well as the Akhbaris. The Akhbaris guide was applied to a number of (4) specialist doctors. In hereditary blood diseases.
The results showed that 75% of mothers are married to their relatives. This is due to the preference for this type of marriage for several reasons, the most important of which are customs and traditions. This confirms the medical point of view that consanguineous marriage is the main cause of children contracting thalassemia. The results of the field study showed that 67.1% of mothers of children with thalassemia underwent a medical examination before marriage, despite the presence of a child with thalassemia, which reflects the lack of seriousness in the matter and that they are merely formal procedures to complete the marriage process.
