The classification of the word is among the most significant topics that preoccupied Arab grammarians, capturing much of their attention and inspiring the writing of numerous books and studies. Thus, this research delves into this pivotal subject, exhibiting the views of modern grammarians concerning word classification, the evidence they provided to validate their perspectives, and a critical discussion of these views—particularly those of Tammam Hassan.
Among the key findings of this study are that the views of the modern scholars are, in practice, enveloped by many things including:
The confusion in the classification of simple words and compounds ones.
The influence by the presumption that the term "word" is Aristotelian in origin.
The impact of the Western linguists such as Firth, Saussure, and Bloomfield.
So, it has been widely recognized that the traditional tripartite classification of the word is noun, verb, and particle. Besides, the Arabic grammar is inherently Arab in origin and development, not borrowed from Greek or Aristotelian grammar. Tammam Hassan is one of the most notable scholars who extensively treated word classification; however, he did not spare his contemporaries` criticism.
