Cultural and social determinants of romantic love: An anthropological approach to the anthropology of love in the villages of Beni Suef Governorate

Abstract

The study aimed to identify the social and economic characteristics of the study community, identify the local vision of the concept of romantic love and its signs, reveal cultural perceptions of romantic love and authority in rural society, identify the language of romantic love, highlight the expressive activities of romantic love and its spaces, and to achieve the objectives of the research, it was applied to a number of Of the respondents, there were 120 cases in the villages of Beni Suef Governorate. The research relied on the qualitative anthropological approach, which is based on a number of tools. In order to obtain sufficient information related to the subject of the research, and to understand the various cultural and social aspects of romantic love, it also relied on the comparative approach to determine the form of changes that occurred in the concepts of romantic love. The research reached several results, the most important of which are: The study revealed differences in the concept of romantic love according to age, gender, and marital status, and the rejection of romantic love by the elderly because it weakens compliance with parental authority, The traditional love discourse was directed towards marriage, procreation, and building a family, away from romance, and the spread of modern social media sites such as phones and the Internet resulted in a change in the concept of romantic love, which has become practiced among young people in the research community. Some young people seek refuge as a result of their intense attachment to those they love, and the families’ view of these romantic relationships before marriage, It is merely a fleeting admiration or attraction that is not suitable for marriage, to deviant methods as a form of resistance to rejecting patriarchal authority. The spaces of love were affected by the modernity experienced by society, which contributed to the multiplicity of these spaces among young people compared to the elderly.
