Social support and optimism as constructs of psychological security among breast cancer patients

Abstract

The current study aims to explore social support and optimism as predictors of psychological security among breast cancer patients. The study sample consists of 200 breast cancer patients with an age range (19-84 years), where the demographic data form , the social support scale (prepared by the researcher), the optimism scale (Ahmed Abdel Khalek , 1996), and the psychological security scale (Zainab Choucair , 2005) are applied to the sample. The results of the study reveal that there is a positive correlation between social support, optimism and psychological security. Also, there are statistically significant differences in social support due to educational level, marital status, and duration of illness. There were no differences due to age, economic status, or stage of treatment. There are no differences in optimism due to age, educational level, marital status, economic status, stage of treatment, and duration of the disease. There are differences in psychological security due to the economic situation. There are no differences due to age, educational level, marital status, stage of treatment, duration of the disease. The results show the contribution of social support and optimism to psychological security at highly significant levels.
