The Relative Contribution of Locus of Control and Critical Thinking in Predicting Cultural Intolerance on Social Media among University Students

Abstract

         The study aimed to reveal the relationship between locus of control and critical thinking and cultural intolerance on social media, and determine the relative contribution of locus of control and critical thinking in predicting cultural intolerance, and to identify differences in cultural intolerance according to gender and academic specialization. Ssample consisted of 909 university student (320 males, 589 females) )  M. 20.22 years and a SD 1.70 years. The study tools, which were applied via the Internet, included the cultural intolerance scale prepared by current researchers, Rotter’s locus of control scale, and critical thinking scale prepared by Sayed Sobhi et al. Results revealed significant positive correlation at the 0.05 level between cultural intolerance and internal locus of control. It also was revealed significant negative correlation at the 0.01 level between total score of cultural intolerance and both cognitive skills and emotional skills of critical thinking. . Critical thinking and locus of control contributed 4% and 1.6%, respectively, in predicting cultural intolerance on social media. It was found also that males are more culturally intolerant on social media than females. It was also found that there were no differences in the total degree of cultural intolerance according to the academic specialization, while it was found that the average degrees of the behavioral and cognitive aspects of cultural fanaticism were significantly higher among students with theoretical specializations compared to the average of students with practical specializations.
