Abstract

The present study attempts to examine the influence of the environment on the poetry of al-Sharīf al-Raḍī. It adopts the ecocritical approach to present the impact of the environment on selected examples from his poetry, analyzing the poet’s choice of words, meanings, and expression of emotions to facilitate a correct understanding of the text. The study employs a combination of ecocritical, descriptive-analytical, and historical methodologies. The findings indicate that the environment had a clear and significant impact on al-Sharīf al-Raḍī’s poetry, formulating his imagination and character, which in turn influenced his poetic language, allowing him to portray events and situations from his life vividly. Besides, the poet’s descriptions of women are enriched through his environmental imagery, portraying them with the beauty found in nature, thus imbuing his poetry with creativity and aesthetic appeal. He also extensively relied on elements of the living and non-living environment—animals, birds, inanimate objects, and plants—to express his inner feelings of sorrow, pain, and emotion, demonstrating the profound effect of both animate and inanimate surroundings on his psyche.
