The Social and Health Conditions of Female Cleaners and Medical Waste Collectors in Governmental Hospitals: A Field Study in One of the Hospitals of Al-Gharbia Governorate

Abstract

The study aimed to obtain a general and realistic picture of the social, economic, and health conditions of female cleaners and medical waste collectors working in governmental hospitals. The fieldwork was conducted at Tanta General Hospital in the city of Tanta, Al-Gharbia Governorate. The study employed in-depth interviews as the main tool for collecting data from female cleaners and medical waste collectors.
The study revealed a number of key findings, the most significant of which are:

Supporting their families is one of the main motives driving women to work in hospital cleaning and medical waste collection.
The social and economic conditions of female cleaners and medical waste collectors in governmental hospitals are generally poor.
Health risks constitute the most serious and frequent hazards faced by these workers in governmental hospitals.
