Abstract

The research aimed at investigating the nature of the relationship between nomophobia (fear of losing the mobile phone) and mental wandering among a sample of university students. The research problem focuses on the fact that the use of mobile phones and learning performance must be carefully considered to obtain a more balanced perspective on the effects of mobile phones on attention and learning.
The research mainly used the descriptive correlational approach. The research sample consisted of (1080) male and female students from Ain Shams University, with (480) male and female students from the theoretical colleges (Education, Arts, and Girls), and (600) male and female students from the practical colleges (Engineering, Computers and Information Technology, and Pharmacy)., with (40) male and female students from each academic level. Their ages ranged between (18-23) years, with an average age of (20.5) and with a standard deviation of (1.87). They were selected randomly, and the research used the nomophobia scale (prepared by the researcher) and the scale of mental wandering (prepared by the researcher). The research found that there is a positive, statistically significant correlation at the significance level (0.01) between nomophobia and mental wandering among a sample of university students. In addition, it was found out that there is a statistically significant difference at the significance level (0.01) between nomophobia and mental wandering in a sample of university students according to the gender variable (in favor of females), according to the academic stage variable (in favor of the first stage), and according to the college variable (in favor of practical colleges).
