The Hebrew maqama is considered one of the most important and most famous narrative forms that appeared in the arena of Hebrew literature in the Middle Ages. The Hebrew maqama witnessed a remarkable development in methods and styles of writing, following in this regard the Arabic maqama. The need of the Jews in Islamic Andalusia for creative production that goes beyond the limits of tradition to authorship has become an urgent necessity that cannot be ignored.
The Hebrew Maqamat had to evolve from a story that reflects the conditions of the Jews in their various societies and their outward behaviors, into a Jewish ritual that searches deep into Jewish history to connect it to the present, using an elegant Hebrew language that combines ancient words and structures with the Arab-Andalusian updates that occurred to it.
Despite the antiquity of the art of maqamat, it shows frameworks and characteristics that we can seek in contemporary critical theories and trends. Hence, this study attempts to present a modern critical vision of this ancient artistic style, by examining metanarrative techniques in the place under study.
